A domestic disturbance in northwest Oklahoma City turned tragic when two people, including one juvenile, were shot dead, and a police officer sustained injuries on Friday afternoon. Capt. Valerie Littlejohn with the Oklahoma City Police Department explained, "When officers were en route, they were advised there was a man there with a gun threatening to shoot people." This account of the incident was reported by KOCO. The shootings occurred in a home near Hefner Road and North Rockwell Avenue, an area described by neighbors as generally quiet.
Neighbor Stephen Smith, who resides next door to the home where the incident occurred, told News 9, "I don’t know what happened," expressing his deep disturbance over the violence that shattered the peace of their community. "Just a great neighborhood," he added, "things change. No neighborhood is safe, you know." During the event, police officers were "ambushed by this suspect," according to Capt. Littlejohn. Inside the home, two children were discovered with gunshot wounds, one of whom did not survive.
The officers involved in the shooting responded to a man armed with a gun, ultimately returning fire and killing the gunman. The confrontation resulted in four people being shot, as per KFOR's update on the situation. The injured officer was transported to the hospital and is expected to recover. The two officers who exchanged gunfire are now on standard administrative leave per department policy while an investigation is carried out.
Reflecting on the victims, Smith shared with News 9, "I see them get off the school bus every day—they’re just great kids," his words tinged with the guilt of not being present to offer help. Capt. Littlejohn, from the Oklahoma City Police, emphasized the traumatic impact of the incident, especially those involving children, on the community and law enforcement alike, saying, "This hits all of us hard." The ongoing investigation seeks to piece together the details of a day that left deep wounds in the fabric of a stunned neighborhood.
