The Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency is working with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the U.S. Coast Guard to improve safety for boaters and anglers near hydroelectric dams in Tennessee. They’ve released new videos to show the dangers in these areas and help prevent accidents, according to the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency.
In the last ten years, 17 boating deaths have occurred near Tennessee’s hydroelectric dams, including Pickwick and Loudon, due to strong currents. Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency Executive Director Jason Maxedon said, "Your safety is our top priority," and urged people to "stay alert, follow posted guidelines, and exercise caution when near dams. The simple steps you take to stay aware can save lives."
A recent demonstration at Pickwick Dam emphasized the dangers of boating near dams. Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency Lt. Col. Matt Majors said that "Boating or fishing near dams requires extra caution even for experienced boaters." To stay safe, Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency advises following all warnings, avoiding fast currents, wearing a life jacket, and staying alert to changing water levels. They also offer a safety video, "No Fish is Worth Your Life," on their YouTube channel. These resources are available for download on the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency website.
