On Christmas Eve, a grim discovery was made when a body was uncovered in the wheel well of a United Airlines plane after a flight from Chicago's O'Hare to Maui's Kahului airport. According to ABC7 Chicago, the deceased was found in the landing gear compartment of United Airlines Flight 202.
The flight, which departed at roughly 9:31 a.m. CT and landed at 2:12 p.m. local time, was tracked by FlightAware.com and confirmed to have an unexpected and tragic stowaway. The body, at this time anonymous and bereft of a story, was not supposed to be to join that flight, to try and conquer the skies hidden in the underbelly of a technological titan. A spokesperson for United Airlines mentioned to ABC7 Chicago that, "United is working with law enforcement authorities on the investigation."
Details have been scant as investigators are piecing together how this incident occurred. How one comes to rest in the hidden spaces of a Boeing 787-10, in the recesses designed for gears and machinery, not for human refuge, remains to be fully understood. NBC Chicago reported that the Maui Police Department is "currently conducting an active investigation regarding a deceased individual discovered on an incoming flight from the mainland..."
United Airlines has openly declared its intent to support the authorities in unraveling how the individual accessed the aircraft's wheel well. The location, only approachable from the exterior, suggests either profound desperation or a damning oversight of security protocols.
