The Contra Costa County Coroner's Office has identified Giovanni Gomez, a 15-year-old Vallejo resident, as the victim of a fatal crash that occurred early Monday morning last October 30, 2023, near Crockett. According to CBS San Francisco, Gomez was behind the wheel of a stolen blue Kia Optima that left the roadway near Cummings Skyway and resulted in his death at the scene.
Evidence collected from the tragic event suggests that a pursuit was initiated when the Contra Costa County Sheriff's Office alerted the California Highway Patrol at 1:24 a.m. of the stolen vehicle. The CHP took over the chase as the car exited Interstate Highway 80, heading onto Cummings Skyway at a reportedly high speed. Following the pursuit, with the car overturned in a field, Gomez was ejected three minutes after the pursuit began at 1:27 a.m., finding Gomez alone in the vehicle at the time of the crash.
In an inquest convened by Sheriff-Coroner David O. Livingston following the incident, a coroner’s jury has now determined the manner of death to be accidental. This finding was reported through an official social media post from the Contra Costa Sheriff-Official Page. The inquest featured testimony from witnesses called by hearing officer Matthew Guichard, ultimately leading to the jury's conclusion.
Coroner's inquests are public hearings when fatal incidents involve law enforcement personnel. In these proceedings, jury members have four options to rule on the manner of death: Accident, Suicide, Natural Causes, or At the hands of another person other than by accident. Sadly, in the case of 15-year-old Giovanni Gomez, they found the manner of death was "accident".
