Last Friday evening in Vancouver, a catastrophic event unfolded when a large powerline plummeted, igniting multiple fires and injury for those caught in its destructive path. Vancouver's fire department received an urgent call at 9:09 p.m. and promptly deployed eleven units to the scene at Ash Street and East Evergreen Boulevard, as reported by KGW.
Upon arrival, firefighters were greeted with a dire situation, a large powerline grounded amidst flickering ground fires and a fully ablaze RV. "Seems to have just scorched the earth," commented Justin Acciavatti, a witness to the havoc, according to KGW. In the throes of this chaos, they discovered a victim, ensnared by the live wires, incapable of escape, and pleading for assistance.
This crisis escalated when three firefighters received electrical burns while executing the rescue. They discovered the victim and conducted the extraction operation amidst a high-voltage environment that charged the very ground they stood on and the adjacent structures, leading to their injuries, as detailed by KATU. The victim was eventually secured and delivered to an ambulance, receiving immediate medical care from the fire department personnel and paramedics before being rushed to Legacy Emanuel Hospital in critical condition.
Only after the local power company intervened to cut electricity to the neighborhood could the firefighters successfully subdue the fires. The de-energization allowed the brave crews to fully extinguish the RV fire and a second blaze that had taken hold of the main house, restoring some semblance of order to the night's disastrous events.
