As the holiday season concludes, Yolo County is encouraging residents to recycle their holiday trees. According to a recent announcement, residents can drop off up to two trees at no cost from Thursday through January 15 at the Yolo County Central Landfill and the Esparto Convenience Center. The initiative aims to convert the trees into compost, which can be used to enrich soil for future growth.
While the season is a time of giving, the landfill is encouraging residents to consider giving their time to help ensure the environmentally safe disposal of hazardous waste. "Residents should ensure that trees are free of all ornaments, flocking, tinsel, garland, and lights," a statement obtained by Yolo County highlighted. For households looking to declutter, the landfill's household hazardous waste drop-off events are held every Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, and the service is offered at no charge to Yolo County residents.
In the digital age, electronic waste is a growing concern, especially with the potential increase in new gadgets during the holiday season. The YCCL provides a solution by offering free recycling of outdated electronics. For older devices that are still in working condition, the Big Blue Barn thrift store offers an option to donate and repurpose these items, helping to extend their lifecycle and support sustainability.
The landfill is suggesting that residents consider simple ways to minimize waste for the New Year, such as composting food-soiled paper plates and napkins. They also remind us to recycle CRV bottles and cans which can be an easy win-win, clearing up the clutter and possibly making some money back in the process. "All food waste and food soiled paper can simply get tossed into one bin," as advised by Yolo County.
YCCL and the Esparto Transfer Station will be closed tomorrow and on January 1 in observance of the holidays, with services adjusted accordingly. Waste Management, Inc. will also delay its pick-up schedule following the holidays, with Wednesday pick-ups moved to Thursday, and subsequent days experiencing a one-day delay. For more information on recycling programs, residents can contact Yolo County's Department of Community Services, Division of Integrated Waste Management at (530) 666-8856 or visit online.
