On Christmas Eve, a technical issue with American Airlines caused a temporary nationwide freeze on its flights, complicating the busy holiday travel season. As abc News reported, a vendor technology problem early this morning led the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to issue a ground stop for the airline's flights.
The stoppage caused delays for many passengers, leaving them stranded without a clear timeline for when flights would resume. American Airlines acknowledged the inconvenience in a social media post, stating, "Your safety is our utmost priority, once this is rectified, we'll have you safely on your way to your destination," in a statement obtained by abc News.
The FAA lifted the ground stop after about an hour, and flights were cleared to board again around 7 a.m., according to CBS12.
During the disruption, American Airlines responded to passengers via social media, stating they were working on a solution, though no specific timeframe was given. "We sincerely apologize to our customers for the inconvenience this morning," American Airlines said in a statement to abc News. "It’s all hands on deck as our team is working diligently to get customers where they need to go as quickly as possible." The airline assured passengers that resolving the technical issue was a top priority, addressing safety concerns.
The incident disrupted holiday travel plans for many, as the Transportation Security Administration expected to screen nearly 40 million travelers between Thursday last week and Thursday next week, a 6.2% increase from the previous year. American Airlines had predicted Friday last week and this Friday to be their peak travel days during the holiday period, which began on Wednesday last week.
The delays were especially noticeable at hubs like Palm Beach International Airport, where three American Airlines flights were scheduled for pre-7 a.m. takeoff today. Normal service resumed, easing concerns about holiday plans being disrupted by technical issues.
