A fatal crash on Interstate 71 has claimed the life of a 19-year-old, according to details released by the Hamilton County Coroner's Office and Montgomery police. The incident, which occurred early today, involved a vehicle colliding with a guardrail at around 1:39 a.m. near the Pfeiffer Road exit.
The victim was identified as Nicholas James Perry of Avon Lake, Ohio. Montgomery Police Sgt. Ken Bertz confirmed that Perry was killed on impact and was pronounced dead at the scene. Following the crash, all lanes of southbound I-71 were closed - a necessary action but one that disrupted the early morning flow of traffic, forcing drivers to exit and then re-enter the interstate temporarily. The closure lasted until lanes were reopened shortly before 5:30 a.m., FOX19 reported.
The aftermath of the crash saw traffic being diverted at the Pfeiffer Road exit, where state traffic cameras captured vehicles being redirected back onto the highway to continue southbound. In their covering of the event, Enquirer media partner The Cincinnati Enquirer provided images of the scene.
While investigations are ongoing, initial police statements suggest neither speed nor impairment played a role in the crash. Authorities shared this detail to gradually piece together the events that led to the tragic outcome. Recovering from such an unexpected loss will doubtlessly prove a challenge for the community and Perry's loved ones. In recounting the incident, WLWT noted that Ohio Department of Transportation officials declared the roadway transparent and open to traffic as of 5:38 a.m., a few minutes after the site had been processed and secured.
