House fire last week has taken the life of 92-year-old Nancy Santos in Oak Ridge. According to details released by the Oak Ridge Fire Department, Santos was pulled from her Sheridan Circle home during the fire but later pronounced dead after being taken to UT Medical Center.
As per the department's report, Santos's daughter managed to escape the burning property and placed the 911 call. The family tragedy also extended to the pets, the house harboring 10 cats and 2 dogs at the time of the fire. Three cats were successfully rescued and have since received care at local veterinarian clinics or animal shelters.
The Oak Ridge Fire Department is actively investigating the incident which has underscored the crucial role of working smoke alarms in homes. In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the department has made a point to encourage residents to ensure their smoke alarms are functional.
