In Central Phoenix, a ribbon-cutting ceremony marked the recent inauguration of Acacia Heights II, the second phase of an affordable housing complex aiming to alleviate the financial burden for local families. Maricopa County officials gathered to open the doors to the new development, which promises to provide a mixture of affordable and workforce housing options tailored to a range of income levels. According to a press release by Maricopa County, Acacia Heights II brings 66 new units to the market, with rents structured to maintain affordability based on household income.
Thomas Galvin, Chairman of the Maricopa County Board of Supervisors, emphasized the county's dedication to supporting families who are struggling to secure housing. "Too many Maricopa County families are struggling to make ends meet and find a safe, comfortable, and affordable place to live," Galvin said, as stated by Maricopa County. He added that initiatives like Acacia Heights II allow families to quickly and more easily focus on their livelihoods without the added concern of housing instability.
The development was made possible in part through a $1.6 million contribution from federal funding via the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA), with the overall cost of the project reaching $24.4 million. This phase is sandwiched between the already completed Phase I and the expected Phase III, which is anticipated to break ground in Fall 2024. Upon completion of all three phases at the end of 2025, the development will offer a total of 212 housing units to residents.
Vice Chair Kate Brophy McGee highlighted the importance of establishing infrastructure like Acacia Heights II for family stability. "This development is more than just housing for families – it provides a strong foundation for them going forward," McGee said, as noted by Maricopa County. She stressed the county's commitment to perpetuate such public/private partnerships to consistently address the affordable housing challenges.
With a $500 million pledge directed towards affordable housing expansion, Maricopa County sees Acacia Heights II as a significant stride forward in its ongoing efforts.
