Heads up, Gilbert commuters: the Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) is starting the new year with significant roadwork on the Loop 202 (Santan Freeway). The eastbound Loop 202 on-ramp at Cooper Road will be closed for 60 days, beginning at 11:30 p.m. on Sunday. This closure is necessary to rebuild the ramp as part of the freeway's expansion efforts, according to a statement from the town of Gilbert's official website.
For those looking to avoid getting trapped in the expected delays, ADOT recommends to instead consider using on-ramps at McQueen or Gilbert roads. This work is just a portion of the larger Loop 202 widening project stretching from Loop 101 to Val Vista Drive. It's important to note that this isn't the only disruption on the horizon. More closures will follow, including the eastbound Loop 202 off-ramp at Gilbert Road and several others that are set to begin closing in succession, each for a 60-day duration.
These forthcoming ramp closures notably include the westbound Loop 202 on-ramp at Gilbert Road, scheduled to begin on February 9, and the westbound Loop 202 off-ramp at Cooper Road, which will close starting February 26. March will also see its share of closures with the westbound Loop 202 on-ramp at Val Vista Drive shuttering starting March 13. ADOT has alerted the public that while these closures are planned, they are subject to shift based on weather or other unpredictable factors.
As a reminder to drivers, ADOT urges caution when navigating these areas. Speed limits have been reduced to 55 miles per hour within work zones, a safety measure meant to protect both motorists and road workers. "Slow down, stay alert and be prepared to merge with caution when approaching and traveling through all work zones," the Gilbert announcement emphasizes. To keep abreast of the latest updates and to gain more information regarding the Loop 202 widening project and its associated traffic restrictions, ADOT directs commuters to visit the project webpage.
