In a clear statement of opposition, Arizona Senator Mark Kelly has voiced his concerns regarding Pete Hegseth's nomination for Secretary of Defense. Kelly, a former combat pilot with the U.S. Navy, sees the position as pivotal for national security and believes that readiness to perform from day one is non-negotiable. His stance was expressed through an official statement released after a vote in the Senate Armed Services Committee.
Senator Kelly emphasized that Hegseth's past experiences do not align with the expectations of the role. "The Secretary of Defense is one of the most important roles for keeping our country safe and we need someone who is ready to step into the job and succeed on day one," Kelly said, as stated by the Arizona Senator's Office. Concerns were also raised about Hegseth's performance during the hearings, where he reportedly failed to directly address questions about personal issues that could impact his capacity to lead.
Despite his opposition to Hegseth's nomination, Senator Kelly remains committed to working collaboratively with whoever assumes the role to ensure that Arizona's defense installations receive the support they need and that the broader objectives of national security are pursued with vigor. "Whether it’s Pete Hegseth or someone else, I’ll always work with the Secretary of Defense to support Arizona's defense installations and strengthen our national security," Kelly affirmed, as per the Arizona Senator's Office.
