A confrontation in Atlanta's West End on Monday resulted in the death of a suspect and injuries to three people, including a Fulton County sheriff’s deputy, following a series of armed robberies. Deputy Lt. Gerald Johnson, working an off-duty job, was approached by Krispy Kreme employees after the first robbery and later encountered the armed suspect near an Easy Rental store. A shootout occurred when the deputy found the suspect, armed with an assault-style rifle, on Lee Street, according to FOX 5 Atlanta.
During a gunfire exchange that occurred shortly after 5 p.m., Lt. Johnson was shot in the hand, sustaining a non-life-threatening injury. Sheriff Pat Labat praised Johnson's actions, saying, "As we often do, he ran toward danger," and confirmed the suspect's death following the incident, as reported by The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.
A deputy, who returned to the sheriff's office part-time in 2022 after retiring, was injured in a shooting following a robbery attempt at Easy Rental, where the suspect also shot two employees. The deputy was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital. Sheriff Labat praised the deputy's long service, saying, "It's one of those things where, ultimately, you want your loved ones to come home safe." The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is looking into the deputy's shooting, while the Atlanta Police Department is investigating the robbery. This is the second officer-involved shooting in Atlanta in two days, as stated by FOX 5 Atlanta.
