On a typical afternoon in south Charlotte, a Brinks armored truck became the center of a high-stakes criminal investigation. According to a report by Queen City News, the incident took place near the intersection of Rea Road and Audrey Kell Road, outside of a Truist Bank in the Blakeney community. An armed suspect confronted a 24-year-old Brinks employee, making off with a 9mm pistol, various ammunition, ATM keys, and a canvas bag. The robbery, taking place around noon yesterday, left authorities questioning whether any money was taken as the suspect remained at large.
While the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police and the Charlotte FBI have confirmed that an investigation is ongoing, they have yet to release detailed information on the heist. At the same parking lot which was observed filled with police activity by WCNC Charlotte, no physical injuries have been reported. Nearby businesses, including a Chick-fil-A franchise, dodged involvement in the crime, confirming that the event did not transpire on their premises, and none of their staff was harmed.
The Charlotte area has witnessed a troubling series of attacks on armored trucks in recent months. Channel 9 covered multiple incidents including a robbery in University City where $270,000 was stolen and a more tragic event in Kings Mountain where an ATM service worker was shot and killed. WSOCTV reported a source indicated the suspected robber was described as wearing a dark hoodie and carrying a black handgun. They may have fled the scene in a truck.
As investigations deepen, channels like Channel 9 will likely follow up with local law enforcement for updates, especially given the recent spate of similar crimes. A local resident, known to WSOC-TV as Vega, recounted the abnormality of such a crime in Ballantyne, affirming, "In this area, not really. It’s a pretty nice area; I’ve lived here all my life." The sense of security once associated with the neighborhood appears shaken, but no serious injuries have been inflicted upon those involved during that bold midday confrontation.
