A boat caught fire in a canal near Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport on Sunday afternoon, according to multiple sources.
The fire, sending plumes of black smoke into the sky, was first reported just after 1 p.m. in the canal situated between the airport and Interstate 95, just north of Griffin Road—which may cause travelers some visual alarm as they come and go from the terminals, but the incident did not seem to disrupt airport operations nor the traffic flow on the roadway, ground and water units from Broward Sheriff's Office Fire Rescue were promptly dispatched to the scene to tackle the inflamed vessel.
Local 10 reported that despite the severity of the fire, no injuries have been reported, a bit of fortunate news amid what could have been a dangerous situation.
While the firefighters fought the blaze and were successful in quelling the flames, the cause of the fire is still unknown at this time and authorities are diving into an investigation to uncover what sparked the incident, at this point speculation remains just that—with no concrete answers yet determined, as per information from Caribbean National Weekly.
Updates on the situation, including any possible implications for travelers or nearby residents, are expected as the investigation continues and authorities parse through the aftermath to determine the cause of the fire and survey any resultant damages to the boat and its surroundings.
