A grim discovery was made in the waters off Coconut Grove as the search for a missing individual ended when rescue crews located a body floating in Biscayne Bay. The search operation began yesterday afternoon following reports of a swimmer who disappeared after attempting to retrieve a dinghy that had detached from the main vessel, near Dinner Key Marina, according to WSVN.
The multi-agency search included the U.S. Coast Guard, Miami-Dade Air Rescue, and Coral Gables Police after a good Samaritan reported a man swimming to collect his untethered dinghy and subsequently not returning, teams launched into action as captured by aerial coverage; confirming the vastness of the operation, NBC Miami unveiled that the unfortunate finding has deepened the community's concerns regarding water safety in the area. The identity of the deceased has not been disclosed pending notification of next of kin.
Officials remained on scene throughout the rescue mission, with Miami Fire Rescue units initially deploying in response to the situation. "U.S. Coast Guard officials said they responded around 3:40 p.m. after a good Samaritan reported seeing a man swimming from the vicinity of Dinner Key Marina to retrieve a loose dinghy who had not returned," stated NBC Miami. A Coast Guard boat and helicopter were involved in the search for the swimmer who reportedly never resurfaced after diving in to retrieve his dinghy.
While the investigation continues, local authorities have not yet specified potential factors contributing to the tragedy.
