In a new move to tackle the pressing issue of human trafficking, the Broward Sheriff’s Office (BSO) has initiated the deployment of QR codes throughout the region. Aiming to provide immediate assistance and information, these QR codes are strategically placed in areas of high traffic and, when scanned by a smartphone, redirect users to the BSO's dedicated page on human trafficking, as reported by Local10.
This January launch, spearheaded by BSO's Strategic Investigations Division, ensures victims have the necessary tools at their fingertips which offers guidance on how to get help as well as insight on recognizing the warning signs of trafficking, the QR codes have been thought as one key to unlock a faster way to support in a field plagued by secrecy and coercion. "Although you think this is your only option, because of the things you have gone through, and the things the trafficker has put in your mind, there are ways you can get your life back and recover and we can help you do that," Sgt. Erica Rockey of BSO's SID told Local10.
The initiative doesn't only focus on victims, it also aims to educate the public about the tell-tale signs of trafficking, thereby fostering a community vigilant and responsive to such exploitative practices. In addition to direct information about the crime, individuals who are cautious or uncertain about involving the authorities have the option to connect with confidential supportive services.
The BSO encourages residents to act as eyes and ears on the ground, and remain alert to any suspicious activities related to human trafficking, and those who find themselves in a position where they suspect such activities are being reminded that they can contact the National Human Trafficking Hotline at 888-373-7888, text "BeFree" to 233733, or make a call to the BSO's non-emergency HELP number at 954-764-4357, in an active situation or when facing an emergency the most immediate course of action is to dial or text 911 according to WSVN.
