Last Tuesday's board meeting in Thornton Township, which sought to jumpstart operations after insurance lapsed, descended into chaos as fists flew during a public comment session, forcing the venue to be evacuated, reported WGN TV. The confrontation began after activist Jedidiah Brown delivered pointed criticism towards Township Supervisor Tiffany Henyard, culminating in the use of an expletive – this led Brown towards Henyard before veering off toward the back, which is where the altercation ignited causing damage including at least one television monitor, amidst the scrambling crowd, Henyard was visibly caught in the middle of the melee.
During the disrupted meeting, the board approved several items, including insurance policies that had lapsed since December, having left residents without access to township services, WGN TV reports, these services, which include the running of buses, were meant to resume following the meeting, despite the clear evidence the buses were previously used even during the insurance hiatus for Henyard's "Big Bingo" event. Additionally, two of Henyard's allies, Kamal Woods, her boyfriend, and William Moore were placed on paid administrative leave, a move Henyard described as “political retaliation” The supervisor commented during the meeting, “Thank you for the lawsuit, Y’all just picked certain individuals.”
Meanwhile, according to CBS News Chicago, the incendiary comments by Brown precipitated a confrontation between him and Henyard's supporters, including Woods, escalating into a physical brawl that engaged multiple participants and prompted security intervention, while the police, summoned to the scene, arrived only to have the participants disperse without arrests being made, thereby ending the board meeting that never formally adjourned.
In the backdrop of local disputes, the Village of Dolton, where Henyard also serves as mayor, has been scrutinized by former federal prosecutor and Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot over financial mismanagement, revealing unchecked spending, including over $200,000 on Amazon purchases, and over $117,000 on travel, concluding in a report that, "The residents of Dolton have suffered needlessly because of the financial mismanagement of this current mayor," Lightfoot has also indicated that the FBI is in contact with individuals about these allegations, as she reported Monday prior to the Tuesday's tumultuous township meeting.
