Chatham County has rolled out an impressive slate of improvements and laid out ambitious goals for the next few years, all in an effort to uplift and safeguard the community.
The Chatham County's review of the past four years highlights the formation of Chatham County Fire Department, a move that has revamped operations and public safety services. Notably, the Flood-Swift Water Rescue Team established in 2024, was crucial during recent storms. The Fire Department is gunning for a Class 1 ISO Public Protection Classification rating, and aiming for CPSE Accreditation to better serve the community.
On the recreational side, Chatham County Parks & Recreation has witnessed a notable uptick in youth sports engagement, facility rentals, and senior programs. The county threw the gates open to its first all-inclusive playground at Ambuc Sports Complex, catering to children regardless of ability, and made hefty upgrades to the sports complex itself. Targeted next steps include expanding arts, cultural, and outdoor activities, with a particular eye on services for aging adults and promoting girls in sports.
Efforts by Mosquito Control have paid off, maintaining a low incidence of mosquito-borne diseases. According to Chatham County reports, "over the past four years, the county has reported only one human case of West Nile Virus, despite 326 WNV-positive mosquito samples." With the wheels in motion to secure $1.5 million in grants and contracts over the next four years, the division plans to continue their vigilant monitoring and prevention programs.
Workplace safety has been upgraded via ARPA-funded software for environmental health and safety, which has streamlined operations. The installation of Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs) across county facilities has beefed up response in times of crises. The review revealed that 545 employees have been trained in CPR/AED, indicating a solid investment in personnel safety and preparedness.
The Board of Elections has maintained an impeccable record, with no infractions or violations in recent years, all the while enhancing its staff to accommodate increasing voter participation. Anticipating further growth, the Board is looking to secure larger office space. In terms of climate action, Chatham County is charging ahead with its first Municipal Solar Program and preparations to launch an Electric Vehicle (EV) program.
Voter Registration has made notable strides by extending early voting opportunities, serving over 91,000 voters and minimising wait times. Forward-looking, the county is set to introduce an outbound vote-by-mail ballot processing service. Financially, the county's discipline has earned them awards in reporting and budget presentation and they've retained a 98% fire fee collection rate, coupled with a reliable reserve for emergencies or unexpected fiscal needs.
The Facilities Maintenance & Operations division scored cost-saving triumphs by converting spaces resourcefully, like the new Employee Health Care Center near St. Joseph Hospital. Not only have these moves saved the county funds, but they’ve also served to enhance employee welfare.
