The City of Chicago bid farewell this weekend to a beloved figure of its gospel music heritage, Rodessa Barrett Porter, the last member of the acclaimed Barrett Sisters, as reported by ABC 7 Chicago. Aged 94, Barrett Porter's presence resonated well beyond the Windy City, where her legacy stands firmly rooted in the soulful and powerful sounds that she and her sisters, Delois Barrett Campbell and Billie Barrett GreenBey, harmonized. The trio was indeed a pivotal fixture in shaping Chicago's gospel music landscape and their impact reverberated through venues and churches internationally.
Barrett Porter's grandchild, Jonathan Scrutchens disclosed that she passed away following complications from a stroke. Born on December 15, 1930, the late singer charted a path with her sisters that inspired and captivated audiences around the globe. Their journey, marked with rapturous performances and an unwavering dedication to their faith and craft, is a testament to the potency of their vocal abilities, combined with the familial synergy of the three sisters. As The New York Times noted, the Barrett Sisters grew up admiring the Andrews Sisters and brought a similar sibling synchronization to gospel music that was both unique and mesmerizing.
The Barrett Sisters' legacy is also a chronicle of the transformative power of music. Despite experiencing a career that wasn't financially lucrative, Rodessa Barrett Porter and her sisters motivated and healed countless souls. They had 15 albums to their credit, with "Jesus Loves Me," released in 1963, marking the beginning of a prolific recording era. Their niece, Mary Campbell, told The New York Times, "They wrecked the place," speaking of the power of the sisters' voices whenever they performed.
She passed away on December 16, just one day after celebrating her 94th birthday. She is survived by her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren. On Saturday, mourners gathered in large numbers at Liberty Baptist Church to pay their respects, ABC 7 Chicago stated.
