Chicago communities in the Fulton Market District, Garfield Park, Near West Side, and West Town are on high alert following a spate of armed robberies announced by the Chicago Police Department. In a series of incidents that have shaken the calm of early morning routines, individuals have been confronted by armed perpetrators, resulting in both loss of property and physical harm. The crimes in question took place within areas covered by the 011th (Harrison) and 012th (Near West) Districts.
According to a public notice by the Chicago Police, the incidents occurred on Friday, with times ranging from 5:40 AM to 7:14 AM, spanning diverse neighborhoods. Offenders, described as 2-3 male Blacks aged between 17-20 years old, donned in black ski masks and dark clothing, have been reported to approach their victims with black handguns after exiting a stolen white Jeep Grand Cherokee. In a twisted ritual, they demanded property, and in a few cases, victims were battered with the weapon.
The police encourage the community to prioritize safety over belongings, quoting that one should "Never resist a robbery. Value your life over any and all property." Amidst the crisis, compassion remains key; it is urged that witnesses, not to just observe, but also reach out and provide contact information that could assist in the investigation.
Community members have been urged to help law enforcement by remembering any unique physical characteristics of the assailants and to abstain from pursuing the fleeing culprits, instead, they should contact the authorities immediately. "Dial 9-1-1 immediately and remain on scene when possible," the notice advises, before also cautioning residents not to tamper with the crime scene.
