According to Chicago Police Department's recent statement, multiple pocket-picking incidents have occurred in the area, spanning December and January. The trend indicates a modus operandi where offenders, at times acting alone, infiltrate crowded eateries to pilfer belongings from the bags, purses, and wallets of unsuspecting customers.
The crimes have been specifically clustered within the 001st (Central) District, with a majority happening inside restaurants, while a few took place on the public way. Entering crowded establishments under the guise of normalcy, the offenders have managed to remove items and subsequently use stolen debit/credit cards for fraudulent purchases. Notably, several incidents were described where the offender was an African American female, with an additional incident involving a male of the same ethnicity, though in many cases the perpetrator's description remains unknown.
