The city of Chicago faced a violent first weekend of the new year with at least two fatalities and several injuries resulting from multiple shootings. According to CBS Chicago, victims ranged in age from 20 to 41 years old, highlighting a worrying trend of gun violence that seems indiscriminate in its reach.
Among the incidents, an employee of a Subway restaurant was accosted at gunpoint by three individuals demanding property, resulting in a botched robbery and an injury to one of the assailants. The 27-year-old perpetrator suffered a gunshot wound to his right leg and was subsequently taken into custody, as detailed by CBS Chicago. The weapon used in the crime was recovered by the officers at the scene.
The weekend's violence did not end there. A 30-year-old man was shot multiple times while in his vehicle on West Washington Boulevard and later died at Mt. Sinai Hospital. Another shooting at East 81st Street claimed the life of a male victim, who succumbed to multiple gunshot wounds. The surge in shootings continued through Sunday, with multiple individuals injured in separate events, including a 20-year-old and a 41-year-old man, both now recovering in local hospitals.
One of the more distressing episodes involved a 41-year-old woman in Austin, who was critically injured on Sunday evening. The woman, as reported by the Chicago Sun-Times, was on West Roosevelt Road when she was approached and shot by an individual. She was struck multiple times and is currently in critical condition at Mount Sinai Hospital, with no suspects yet in custody for this attack.
Officials and law enforcement are expected to respond to this surge in criminal activity.
