The New Year in Chicago ushered in not just the hopes of a new beginning but the presence of ongoing violence, with the city reporting its first homicide of 2025 and multiple shootings that left one dead and eleven others wounded. According to WGN-TV, the first homicide was a 29-year-old man discovered unresponsive with gunshot wounds in the Roseland neighborhood on the South Side of Chicago. The Cook County Medical Examiner's office has yet to identify the victim. The shootings, which occurred in various locations across the city, spanned a brief time window between midnight and 4:30 a.m., as detailed by FOX 32 Chicago.
The violence didn't discriminate by geography or circumstance, in one event a 29-year-old man was shot in the leg while riding in a car through Wicker Park, and in another, a 30-year-old man sustained a gunshot to the face from an assailant in a red vehicle in Bronzeville. Chicago Police Department has yet to report any custody in connection with the homicide, and detectives from Area Two are investigating the incident revealed by the early morning's first grey light.
In response to the surge of violence in the city's first hours of 2025, Chicago’s Mayor Brandon Johnson spoke of building on the work accomplished in the previous years, emphasizing the need for collective effort. "While this year's work proves progress, we know there's still more work to be done," the mayor said, as FOX 32 Chicago reports. He also announced a goal for the year to reduce homicides to below 500—a figure not seen since 2015.
The city recorded 572 homicides last year which, while being an improvement from the 615 homicides of the previous year, serves as a reminder that although numbers can decline the weight of each life lost remains immeasurable.
