Efforts by the California Highway Patrol (CHP) to curb reckless driving on Bay Area highways led to an alarming discovery just after the new year began. Officers from the CHP Oakland Area office observed a white Kia Optima speeding through the westbound carpool lane of Interstate 80, going over 100 mph near the Powell Street exit, as mentioned in a social media post by CHP Oakland.

After a pursuit that brought them to the Fremont Street off-ramp in San Francisco, the officers were able to stop the vehicle, where they encountered an unlicensed driver behind the wheel.

The vehicle was eventually found to be carrying more than just speed; a firearm with a high-capacity magazine and an auto sear, or "switch," a device that illegally transforms a semi-automatic weapon into a fully automatic one, was also discovered.
