Cleveland residents can expect a twist in the weather as a cold front is set to push through the area today, according to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Cleveland. While high pressure will follow quickly behind it tonight into Thursday, Friday will bring a low-pressure system through the Ohio Valley, accompanied by high pressure building out of the Great Lakes by Saturday.
The weather shift will start with warmer and drier conditions than anticipated. However, light precipitation should soon develop across the snowbelt, leading to some adjustments in the weather forecast. Though there have been concerns about possible snow showers or squalls along the front, given the mild temperatures at the start of the day, officials maintain the rest of the forecast is mainly on track. The NWS warned, "Potential for a brief squall with LIFR vsby is less confident, though is still possible at YNG, and perhaps CLE and ERI too."
Under the influence of the aforementioned cold front, temperatures should drop south into the area around mid-morning and continue into the afternoon. As for snow accumulations, the NWS suggests that "highs today will range from the low to mid-30s in Northeast OH and Northwest PA to near 40 towards Marion." Experts estimate a light coverage with 1-3 inches for most of Northwest PA, diminishing further to less than an inch in Cleveland and Akron areas, and very minimal accumulation expected west.
Towards the end of the week, Thursday promises to be quite pleasant, with partly to mostly sunny skies and moderate southwest breezes. At the same time, the maritime forecast on Lake Erie remains complicated due to extensive ice cover. Yet, small craft advisory issuance remains suspended, with locales hunkering down for a multi-faceted front. The NWS also highlighted the return of VFR conditions, stating, "as high pressure builds out of the Ohio Valley tonight expect this activity to wind down with all sites returning to VFR overnight."
With a mix of weather patterns bobbing and weaving through the region, Clevelanders should prepare to embrace changeable conditions and keep their winter gear on hand for at least a few more days.
