In a green initiative following the holiday season, the City of Conyers is partnering with the Keep Georgia Beautiful Foundation and several sponsors to provide a recycling program for Christmas trees. The Home Depot, The Davey Tree Expert Company, Georgia Forestry Commission, 11 Alive, Ferry Morse Company, and Burpee Seed Company are collaborating to transform post-holiday evergreens into something beneficial for the environment. Residents are encouraged to take their live, undecorated trees to The Home Depot at 1330 Dogwood Drive in Conyers from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, January 4, 2025, for recycling.
The initiative titled "Bring One for the Chipper" aims to repurpose the trees in various eco-friendly ways. The recycled trees will be converted into mulch, which will subsequently be used for playgrounds, city and county landscaping projects, or for individual home use. In addition to mulching, the trees will find new life in aquatic habitats to support fish and other wildlife. This recycling effort is part of a larger state-wide endeavor that has seen over 6 million trees diverted from landfills since its inception in 1991, according to the City of Conyers.
Christmas tree farms across the United States currently nurture nearly 350 million trees. These trees play a crucial role in the ecosystem by absorbing carbon dioxide, emitting fresh oxygen, stabilizing soil, and providing protection for water supplies as well as offering refuge to wildlife. The recycling program by Conyers aligns with the ecological benefits these trees provide while they are growing. It extends their utility beyond the festive season, thereby reinforcing a cycle of sustainability that benefits both the local environment and the community at large.
Those interested in participating in the recycling event are reminded that all ornaments, tinsel, lights, and stands must be removed from their trees before drop-off. The program offers a responsible alternative for disposal and stands as an example of how holiday traditions can adapt to embrace environmentally friendly practices.
