A Newnan man is behind bars after deputies say he assaulted his 14-year-old daughter and then held her hostage inside their home for hours, in a standoff that ended only after he fell asleep and the girl slipped out a side door to safety. Coweta County Sheriff's deputies were called to the residence in the 2700 block of Highway 154 around 4:23 p.m. Tuesday after witnesses reported the assault and hostage situation. Jeremy Lin Head was taken into custody that night without further incident.
The call brought a massive law enforcement response to the stretch of Highway 154 near Newnan, according to FOX 5 Atlanta. Coweta County Sheriff's Office deputies, the county's SWAT team, drone operators and hostage negotiators all converged on the scene, joined by the Georgia State Patrol SWAT team, the station reports. That kind of multi-agency buildup reflects how seriously authorities treated the report of a barricaded parent holding a minor inside the home, as detailed by The Georgia Sun.
Negotiators held a perimeter for roughly four hours as the standoff dragged into the evening. Around 8:30 p.m., Head fell asleep inside the home, and his daughter used the opportunity to escape through a side door, according to the same FOX 5 Atlanta report. SWAT entry teams then moved in and arrested Head without further incident, a sequence of events also confirmed by WSB-TV.
Charges Include Cruelty to Children and Terroristic Threats
Following his arrest, Head was booked into the Coweta County Jail on charges of false imprisonment, battery under Georgia's Family Violence Act, cruelty to children, two counts of terroristic threats and acts, possession of a weapon during the commission of a crime, and obstruction, per the station's report. Under Georgia law, false imprisonment occurs when someone confines or detains another person without legal authority, violating their personal liberty — a standard that, as explained by Chehimi Law, differs from kidnapping because it does not require moving the victim to another location.
The cruelty to children charge carries especially steep exposure. First-degree cruelty to children under Georgia Code involves maliciously causing cruel or excessive physical or mental pain to a minor under 18, and it carries a statutory penalty of five to 20 years in prison, according to Cobb Defense. It remains unclear what specific weapon, if any, was involved during the hours-long standoff, and the current medical condition of Head's daughter has not been publicly disclosed. Head's bond status ahead of upcoming proceedings in Coweta County Superior Court is also not yet known.
A Long History With Coweta County Law Enforcement
Tuesday's standoff is far from Head's first violent run-in with authorities in the area. In October 2022, he was apprehended at a Carroll County home after spending more than a year evading law enforcement while listed as one of Coweta County's Most Wanted fugitives, the station's report notes. Jail records at that time documented 12 separate sets of mugshots for Head dating back to 2008, reflecting nearly two decades of encounters with local police.
Head's history includes a prior violent domestic case on the very same road where Tuesday's standoff unfolded. A Coweta County grand jury previously indicted him on two counts of aggravated assault stemming from a January 2018 domestic incident in the 2000 block of Highway 154, in which he allegedly fired a shotgun three times at a family member before beating the victim with the weapon, per the same account. He later faced probation violation charges after failing to appear in court for that case.
Head was also charged by state troopers following a 2018 crash that killed a 26-year-old Newnan mother, which led to a grand jury indictment; he ultimately pleaded guilty to driving on a suspended license in connection with that case. Taken together, the pattern spans nearly two decades and multiple violent domestic allegations tied to the same corridor of Highway 154 where his daughter escaped Tuesday night.
