
A tragic hit-and-run on New Year's Eve in Pompano Beach has led to the arrest of a Coral Springs man, who allegedly struck and killed a scooter operator before attempting to flee the scene in an Uber, local authorities reported. Jacques Malik Mayfield, 24, was driving westbound near the 3000 block of West Copans Road when he collided with Lokesley Myrthil, who was operating a Volpam electric scooter in the same direction, TapInto Coral Springs detailed.
The impact reportedly caused Myrthil to strike the car's windshield and be thrown into the roadway, fatally injuring him, he was declared dead at the scene by the Broward Sheriff's Office, detectives from BSO Traffic Homicide Unit assert that Mayfield did not stop after the collision, continuing to drive several blocks before deserting the car and along with his passengers attempted to escape on foot. Mayfield and one of his passengers were later detained by BSO deputies, in collaboration with Coconut Creek Police officers, as they were getting into an Uber vehicle, authorities said.
In connection with the incident, Mayfield has been charged with several offenses, including failure to remain at an accident involving death, driving without a license causing death, and a felony probation violation, additionally, court records indicate possession of cannabis charges have been filed against him, as for the other detained individual, information regarding their potential charges has not been disclosed, as per Coral Springs Talk.
Authorities have not yet released additional details about the victim, Lokesley Myrthil, however, the investigation into the fatal crash continues as per the Broward Sheriff's Office who are handling the case; representatives of the agency mentioned that the inquiry into the circumstances of the accident remains active, while Mayfield is currently being held without bond at the BSO Main Jail, according to jail records.
