A juvenile male was left critically injured following a shooting incident at a neighborhood park in Decatur, as reported by the DeKalb County Police Department. The shooting occurred at Rainbow Creek Community Park on the 2600 block of Rainbow Creek Drive around 11 a.m. yesterday. Upon arrival, police found the boy with a gunshot wound. He was rushed to a local hospital where he remains in critical condition, according to FOX 5 Atlanta.
Investigators, scrutinizing the basketball courts and parking lot for clues, believe that the altercation leading to gunfire stemmed from a dispute. Still reeling from the sound of gunshots interrupting their preparations for the Georgia Bulldogs football game were residents Dexter Smalls and his wife. "My wife and I were here getting ready for the football game and I heard, I’m not sure if I heard one or two shots, but I did hear at least one shot," Smalls told FOX 5 Atlanta. Smalls, deeply affected by the violence in his typically serene neighborhood, described it as heartbreaking, especially given the involvement of young people.
The identity of the victim has not been released, and as of yet, no arrests have been announced in connection with the shooting. Atlanta News First noted the incident took place in a mostly residential area. Aerial footage obtained by SKYFOX 5 around 12:30 p.m. depicted officers searching the site thoroughly for evidence.
The DeKalb County Police Department is actively seeking information from the public regarding this case. Smalls, speaking on the community impact, hoped for the boy's recovery and the well-being of his family during the holiday season. "I hope they pull through and their family can continue enjoying the rest of the holiday season," he expressed to FOX 5 Atlanta.
