DeKalb County District Attorney Sherry Boston announced the conviction of Danny John Marillo Hunter, 34, for the September 2021 killing of his tenant, Kateasha Cardell, 40. He was also convicted for the assault of her fiancé, Karlo Dupree, 48, according to the DeKalb County District Attorney.
Last Thursday, Hunter was found guilty of Felony Murder, Involuntary Manslaughter, and several firearm-related charges for a shooting over three years ago. The incident, stemming from a landlord-tenant dispute on Dove Valley Road, led to Cardell's death and left her partner, Dupree, injured. On Thursday, Hunter was sentenced to life in prison, bringing an end to the case, as stated by the DeKalb County District Attorney.
The dispute stemmed from reported threats and a heated argument over financial discrepancies and utility shut-offs, during the course of this argument, Hunter armed with a revolver, committed the irrevocable act of shooting Cardell, then turned the weapon towards Dupree who fled the scene to seek help from law enforcement. Hunter's claims of self-protection were rejected by investigators as neither Cardell nor Dupree were found armed. Lead prosecutor Kara Roberts, with help from Parker Aziz, J.B. Williams, Millicent Taylor, and Detective Knight, made sure the case was thoroughly investigated, leading to a legal conclusion for this tragic incident, as reported by the DeKalb County District Attorney.
