Deer Park, a community unaccustomed to gunfire shaking its suburban calm, is grappling with the aftermath of a shooting that left an adult woman and a 12-year-old boy critically injured. According to the Deer Park Police Department, the incident occurred yesterday afternoon around 2:50 p.m. at a residence in the 4100 block of Glenway Avenue. Both victims were transported to local hospitals with severe injuries, as WLWT reported the police chief's description of the injuries as "not good."
Neighbors, confronted with the unsettling sight of multiple police cruisers, expressed their shock to WLWT, noting the rarity of such violent events in the area. One resident, recounting the initial encounter with the crime scene during a routine dog walk, shared, "That's the first time something like this has happened in my life, actually. But we've lived here for over 20 years and never had anything like this happen." Following the shooting, an alert indicated that the suspect fled in a silver sedan, yet the chief assured the public there was no ongoing danger.
Adding to the community's distress, the young victim was identified as a student from Amity Elementary School, compounding the sorrow with a stark reminder of violence's reach into the lives of our youngest. In a message to parents and staff, Superintendent Jay Phillips of the Deer Park Community City School District conveyed his heavy heart and the uncertainty that loomed over the incident, as reported by FOX19. "It is with a heavy heart that I share some difficult news with you. Earlier today, we were informed that a 12-year-old student from Amithy Elementary was shot. At this time, we do not have further details about the incident and the student’s name has not been released."
The school district, recognizing the emotional toll such an event can exact on its children and faculty, arranged for counselors and mental health professionals to be available at the school on Monday. Superintendent Phillips, addressing the families in the district, emphasized the role of parents in these trying times, as The Enquirer noted, saying, "As parents, you play an essential role in helping your children navigate challenging situations. If your child expresses any concerns or emotions about this incident, please reassure them and remind them that they are safe. Encourage them to talk about their feelings, and do not hesitate to reach out to your school counselor or administration if additional support is needed." The shooting is being investigated as a domestic incident, with details forthcoming as the investigation progresses.
