Last Sunday morning, a Hall County deputy and an armed driver exchanged gunfire during a chase. The pursuit began around 3 a.m. on I-985/SR 365 northbound after deputies tried to stop the driver for erratic driving, according to Atlanta News First.
A 26-year-old driver, Austin Cole Abel of Cleveland, Georgia, led a deputy on a chase after turning onto SR 52/Lula Road. During the pursuit, "initial details of the investigation indicate Mr. Abel opened fire on the patrol vehicle and the deputy returned fire." Fortunately, no injuries were reported in the incident, as confirmed by Atlanta Journal Constitution.
The chase ended when Abel's car flipped into a ditch. Deputies arrested him after a brief standoff. Though he complained of minor injuries, he refused medical treatment. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is investigating the shooting, while the sheriff's office is looking into other parts of the incident. "The shooting is being investigated by the GBI, while sheriff’s office investigators are looking into ‘the other aspects of the incident,’" the sheriff's office said, as stated by Atlanta Journal Constitution.
