An 18-year-old woman from Des Plaines is facing charges after she allegedly threatened to carry out a shooting at the elementary school she attended as a child. Esmeralda E. Vargas stands accused of disorderly conduct, a felony, after a video surfaced on TikTok in which she appeared to idolize the Uvalde school shooter and threatened to "shoot up" North Elementary School, according to the Chicago Sun-Times.
The alarm was raised after the SS-ARS Crisis Center, an organization that collects tips on potential school shootings, received an anonymous tip-off and alerted local school officials about the threatening content. Des Plaines Police Department was quick to dive into an investigation which led them to Vargas' address in a block of East Willow Avenue. Despite a thorough search of Vargas' home, no firearms were uncovered, and Vargas was subsequently barred from setting foot on any School District 62 property, as stated in a report by CBS News Chicago.
A further investigation ensued after officers obtained a search warrant directed at TikTok to reveal the contents of Vargas' post and her messaging on the platform. TikTok complied on December 6, sharing details of a conversation wherein Vargas allegedly reiterated her threat against North Elementary School. The communication with an unknown user on TikTok added another layer to the concerns of the police and the community.
Vargas turned herself in to the local police on December 30, where she was charged, cited, and released as is consistent with the state law. The Des Plaines Police have not found evidence of an immediate threat since no firearms were located in her residence, but the incident left a ripple of unease across the community. As conveyed in their statement, authorities remain vigilant and resolute in protecting the sanctity of their schools and the safety of their children.
