An incident involving three East Chicago Central High School staff members has resulted in felony charges. Principal Abrian Brown, Dean of Students Corey Bailey, and head varsity basketball coach Alaa Mroueh are accused of unlawful entrance into a student's home after an October football game theft emerged. Items, including AirPods and athletic gear, were taken from the visiting Hanover Central High School's locker room. Court documents, as reported by FOX 32 Chicago, indicate that instead of contacting authorities, the officials decided to track down the stolen goods themselves.
According to the charges filed, the school administrators showed up at a student's house around 11 p.m., the same night of the theft. Entering the home, they encountered the student's mother, who was suddenly awoken by the commotion. She told FOX 32 Chicago, "Y'all came to my house like the mob." The trio reportedly believed retrieving the items on their own would help the involved students avoid jail time. Despite claiming to have not forced entry, the school officials admitted during the investigation to have entered the home after incidentally finding an open door.
The School City of East Chicago responded by immediately placing the employees on administrative leave. They issued a statement that read, "While the theft was an isolated incident, it was treated with utmost concern," as covered by ABC 7 Chicago. They further expressed commitment to ensuring a safe environment and maintaining community trust. The involved staff, still employed by the school district, are set to appear in court on March 6.
The act of the administrators, while intended to be corrective, crossed legal boundaries in Indiana. They are currently charged with Residential Entry, a Level 6 felony in the state. The forthcoming legal process will bring more details to light and could potentially lead to a discussion about the balance between school authority and adherence to legal procedures when discipline blurs into criminal justice territory. Meanwhile, the school district reexamines their protocols to prevent such incidents in the future.
