In a sizable drug bust, U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers at El Paso's Paso Del Norte international crossing intercepted 41.6 pounds of cocaine on Thursday. A 21-year-old U.S. citizen attempting to drive a 1997 Lincoln Town Car across from Mexico was found harboring the illicit substance cunningly stashed in the vehicle's nooks, including the quarter panels and dashboard.
According to the CBP, the early morning interception occurred shortly before 6 a.m., when a lone driver presenting the vehicle for entry into the United States triggered an officer's suspicion, leading to a more thorough examination. "CBP officers remain vigilant in their efforts to stop any and all drug smugglers," acting CBP El Paso Port Director Arnie Gomez said in a statement, highlighting the relentless scrutiny border agents employ to curb such smuggling attempts. A comprehensive Z-Portal x-ray scan of the car further exposed abnormalities within the vehicle's structure.
The driver was promptly arrested and now is facing charges for his involvement in the smuggling attempt. Standing testament to the acute vigilance of the border officers, the individual, along with the clandestine drug haul, was subsequently handed over to the Texas Department of Public Safety, as per a CBP news release.
