
Residents of Northeast El Paso were on alert this evening after the El Paso Fire Department and Texas Gas Service rushed to address a gas leak at the intersection of Fred Wilson Avenue and Alabama Street, an incident requiring specialized repair equipment, as reported by KVIA. The situation escalated around 6:30 p.m. from "Condition 1" to "Condition 2", indicating the urgency in mitigating the rupture of an 8-inch gas line lying beneath the street's surface.
As detailed by KFOX-TV, despite the severity of the leak and the necessary closure of Fred Wilson Avenue, the El Paso Fire Department assured the public that no evacuations were needed, however, the winds carried the odor of gas into central and downtown El Paso which might cause discomfort to some it's not expected to be dangerous, the leak was secured by 8:23 p.m., which provided some relief to worried residents.
The no immediate threat to residents coupled with no reported injuries or transports added a layer of solace to the alarming event, Texas Gas also took prompt action to secure gas valves in the vicinity as a preventive measure ensuring customer service remained uninterrupted according to KTSM. The community's well-being remained a priority, with the EPFD reiterating there was "no imminent danger" despite a pervasive gas smell due to the direction of the wind.
