Fort Lauderdale residents faced an urgent evacuation yesterday as a fire broke out on the fourth floor of a condominium building around 7:30 p.m. According to Local 10 News, the blaze was contained to a storage space above an elevator shaft at the building situated along the 600 block of Tennis Club Drive.

Although the fire was localized, the urgency, and fear were palpable among the residents, who attempted to tackle the rapidly growing flames with fire extinguishers to no avail. The building's fire alarms reportedly did not activate during the emergency, a concern echoed by multiple residents and currently being investigated by the Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue, as noted by Local 10 News. A total of 24 units were evacuated; however, authorities anticipate allowing most residents to return home as the majority of units were spared from smoke, water, or fire damage.

Over at 7News, coverage showed fire crews battling the two-alarm fire as heavy smoke belched from the condominium's windows, necessitating the use of ladders and hose lines. Fire caused significant scorching to the roof before being subdued by the firefighters. The strong communal spirit was evident as residents knocked on one another's doors to alert their neighbors to the danger.

One resident, Farjin Haque shared their harrowing experience with 7News, saying, "We smelled smoke. At first, we thought it was our stove that was on or something and then we realized that all of our stoves were off and my dad came downstairs and said there was a fire that he saw from his window. We got outside and we saw that the fire was from the fourth floor I talked to my neighbors to try to see what we can do and I smashed the fire extinguisher so we could try to use that, but the fire was just spewing and growing and growing." Meanwhile, Fire Chief Stephen Gollan credited both the fire department and community members for the rapid evacuation and containment efforts.

Further details provided by NBC Miami confirmed that although the roof and an elevator shaft sustained damage from the blaze, no residences were harmed, allowing for the safe return of the building's occupants. The origin of the fire remains under investigation as authorities delve into what sparked the chaos in the storage unit near the elevator shaft. Thankfully, no injuries were reported in the incident.
