The King County Sheriff's Office's Major Crimes Unit has commenced an investigation into a house fire in Burien that left one person dead. The incident, which occurred yesterday morning, resulted in the deployment of King County Fire District 2 firefighters to a residence in the 12400 block of 13th Pl. SW, as reported by the KOMO News. Upon firefighters' request, deputies arrived at the scene where "Ultimately, one person was pronounced deceased," said KCSO spokesperson Brandyn Hull.
Further complicating the response was a partial roof collapse and a significant internal fire load, which posed safety hazards for the firefighters. As they sought entry via various means, even scaling a ladder to the second floor, the instability forced a defensive firefighting strategy until daylight, according to KIRO 7. With the break of day, crews gained the upper hand, extinguishing most of the blaze and finally discovering the deceased individual upstairs.
The lack of sprinklers in the home was identified as a factor contributing to the fire's rapid expansion. The circumstances leading to the fire's ignition and the resultant fatality remain under probe by the King County Fire Investigation Unit. Authorities encouraged public cooperation, urging anyone with relevant information to reach out to the King County Sheriff’s Office, as mentioned in coverage on B-Town Blog.
Throughout the following morning, approximately ten to twelve fire department units were reported to be on the scene, handling remaining hot spots and assisting in the investigation. The cleanup operations affected the neighborhood, and as per the KIRO 7 article, the fire crews appreciated the local community's patience. Updates on the investigation are expected as more information comes to light.
