The blaze, reported just before 5:00 p.m. on Monday, carried the mark of winter's cruel irony, pitting fire against the ice that formed as quickly as the water intended to quell it landed. NBC Chicago footage captured the scene as smoke pulled fiercely from the afflicted home, while firefighters combated reduced visibility and the frigid assault enveloping them.
According to the Palos Park Police Department, the alert first came from one of their own, an officer on patrol who noticed smoke wafting from a residence located at the intersection of 123rd Street and 81st Avenue. The officer's keen observation set into motion a response by dozens of firefighters. "It is amazing. The street was loaded with water... working in this weather," neighbor Beverly Lynch told NBC Chicago, bearing witness to the extraordinary efforts of the first responders in sub-freezing temperatures.
Separately, Carolyn Mitchell, out walking her neighbor's dogs, picked up the scent of trouble, mistaking it initially for the innocuous smell of a bonfire. "I thought it was, like, ash, like a bonfire. Never saw flames, and then I came in and all this whole area was filled with trucks," Mitchell recounted to ABC 7 Chicago. Mitchell's empathy echoed the sentiment of a tight-knit community, saying, "I feel terrible. My heart goes out to all of them. No one wants to lose their home, especially when it's wintertime, too. You know, you have to find shelter. So, hopefully, they have family that could help them,"
As the fire crews began to retreat, streets in the vicinity remained closed, and Palos Park police secured the scene through the night. The cause of the fire has yet to be disclosed, as investigators sift through the testimony of a charred foundation in search of an answer.
