Five individuals were hospitalized after a home under construction catastrophically collapsed in Weymouth, Massachusetts, according to local authorities. The incident occurred today, shortly before noon, when a call to responders brought them hastily to the scene on Vine Street. A technical rescue team had to quickly extricate one victim who was discovered trapped in the debris. In a statement obtained by Boston 25 News, Weymouth Deputy Fire Chief Tom Murphy detailed, "It looked like the building got pushed over."
The urgency of the situation was compounded by the day's strong winds, which had forecast gusts ranging from 35 to 50 mph. Amid these conditions, firefighters had to carefully shore up the building using structural struts in order to safely remove the trapped person. The critically injured victim was then, according to Murphy's interview with NBC10 Boston, transported to a local hospital while unconscious and suffering from life-threatening injuries. Their name hasn't been released. Four others emerged from the collapse unaided, but still sustained various minor injuries, including head trauma, and were taken from the site for treatment.
No first responders were injured during the rescue operations. This incident was paralleled by another the same day, where scaffolding was sent tumbling in Quincy due to the intense wind. Both occurrences are currently still under investigation to determine the precise cause of the collapses.
Officials have yet to confirm whether the strong winds played a definitive role in the Weymouth construction collapse. However, the timing within a context of hazardous wind conditions has raised questions about the structural integrity and safety measures implemented at the construction site. Murphy emphasized to reporters that the weather was indeed "a concern of ours," leaving open the possibility that natural forces may have conspired to bring about the calamity, as per NBC10 Boston. Further updates are expected as the experts continue to unravel what exactly happened on Vine Street, and as those involved steadily, hopefully, recover from their injuries.
