The Flint Institute of Music (FIM) has garnered significant financial support earmarked for its musical therapy programs, directing the funds specifically toward aiding systems-impacted young individuals in the Flint area. The grants, which total over $141,000, were allocated by the Community Foundation of Greater Flint and the Michigan Health Endowment Fund, as reported by ABC12.

FIM's Arts-Informed Therapy (AIT) program received a $50,000 grant from the Community Foundation of Greater Flint and a more substantial grant of over $91,500 from the Michigan Health Endowment Fund, unveiling a concerted effort to address the mental health needs of children entangled within the juvenile justice system as well as those transitioning out of Michigan's foster care system. According to a release on The Flint Courier News, this marks the first instance FIM has benefited from the Health Fund's generosity.

The initiative utilizes an array of expressive arts therapies—encompassing music, dance, and drama—coupled with family therapy to improve the youth's emotional expression, coping skills, and social behaviors. "Youth served by the child welfare and juvenile justice system are five times more likely to have problem behaviors and poor psychosocial functioning compared to the general population," Janelle Ballard, FIM Music Therapy Department Chair, told Flint Beat.

Ballard further stressed the heightened risk Flint children face due to the city's water crisis, emphasizing that lead poisoning can exacerbate emotional and behavioral issues. "We're incredibly thankful to both the Community Foundation of Greater Flint and the Michigan Health Endowment Fund for their generous support," Ballard expressed, as noted by The Flint Courier News.

Both founding organizations have strong community ties and a history of supporting local initiatives. The Michigan Health Endowment Fund is dedicated to enhancing the health and well-being of Michigan residents, aiming to curtail healthcare costs, while the Community Foundation of Greater Flint works as a partner and leader in connecting philanthropy with community needs throughout Genesee County, including its role in stewarding the Flint Kids Fund in response to the water crisis.
