On the morning of September 26, 2023, a scene unfolded on the Howard Frankland Bridge that now finds former federal prosecutor Patrick Scruggs at the center of a legal battle over his response to a rush-hour traffic incident. Details from new court documents released last week shed light on the dramatic chain of events, as reported by WFLA and supported by filings obtained from other sources.
According to a deposition transcript mentioned by Tampa Bay Times, Blake Sharp, the driver at the center of this incident, claimed he lost consciousness due to diabetes before the collision on the bridge, though Scruggs' legal team argues that medical records do not support this claim. After Sharp's vehicle came to a halt, Scruggs reportedly used a pocketknife to break the window and, during a struggle to unlock the door, stabbed Sharp multiple times.
Scruggs, who was arrested and charged with aggravated battery, aggravated assault, and burglary, is due to go on trial next month. His defense attorneys are actively seeking additional evidence, particularly from Sharp, whose supposedly impaired state at the time of the incidents is being scrutinized. FOX 13 News reported on the defense's efforts to delve into a suspected history of drug use and the details of a phone call Sharp had before the crash with Carlos Cruz, an investigator for the State Attorney’s Office.
Images of Scruggs, clad in shorts and flip-flops and wielding a knife, quickly circulated on social media after the incident. A passing St. Petersburg police officer apprehended him "within moments,” according to the documentation from WFLA. Despite Sharp's testimony that he did not consume any intoxicating substances that day, his attorneys are intent on examining the true nature of Sharp's condition and the factors leading to the violent confrontation.
