Olivier Ricardy Alexandre, a former track star whose athletic feats once defined his public persona, now faces a starkly different reality after being sentenced to 20 years in prison for firearms offenses. Alexandre's sentence, imposed last Friday by U.S. District Court Judge David S. Leibowitz, marks the culmination of his legal woes, which include an attempt to shoot a man and a separate confrontation with a tow truck driver, as reported by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Florida.
The downward spiral for Alexandre began shortly after a probation sentence for trafficking marijuana in Warren County, KY., it rapidly accelerated less than a month later in Miami-Dade County where Alexandre fired at a victim with at least 18 rounds, a disturbing act of violence that failed to reload any sense of hope for his floundering path. The echo of this gunfire would reverberate through Alexandre's fate, with the Miami-Dade Police Department Forensic Services Division linking those shell casings to three prior shootings in the area—one of which also targeted the same victim, who was previously shot on October 9, 2022, using the same firearm.
Further trouble ensued on March 21, 2023, when Alexandre, in a move characterized by an uncanny lack of foresight, brandished a handgun with an extended drum magazine against a tow truck driver repossessing a vehicle. This defiant act of desperation concluded with his arrest by officers of the Plantation Police Department as they prepared to execute a search warrant on his home.
The joint investigation by the ATF, USPIS, and MDPD, with assistance from Plantation Police Department and Broward Sheriff’s Office, was decisive in Alexandre’s prosecution, leading to his conviction on charges of possession of ammunition and firearms by a convicted felon; Assistant U.S. Attorney Hayden P. O’Byrne executed the case within the wider scope of Project Safe Neighborhoods—a federal initiative focusing on reducing gun violence and other violent crimes across communities, seeking safety for all members of society.
