Commuters in Fort Lauderdale should prepare for some overnight disruptions next month, as the Henry E. Kinney Tunnel northbound lane is set for closure on February 18. From 9 p.m. to 4 a.m., the tunnel will be off-limits to traffic, with the obstruction laying the groundwork for essential system testing, needed by the contractor to proceed, according to a recent announcement by the city's government.
The temporary shutdown will inevitably press drivers to take alternative routes. Traversing northbound motorists, they will be rerouted via SE 7th Street, SE 3rd Avenue, and SR 842/Broward Boulevard. These detours are designed to reduce congestion and ease the travelling experience, albeit temporally displaced.
To smooth the inevitable creases that come with such traffic rerouting, detour signs will be clearly positioned, offering guidance to those unfamiliar with the alternative paths. Local authorities are encouraging drivers to plan ahead for this closure, "Please plan accordingly and allow extra time for travel," implores the city's advisory.
