The city is gearing up for an operational overhaul as emergency medical services (EMS) transition from MedStar to the City's umbrella. According to the City of Fort Worth, a proposed Emergency Medical Services Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) was presented at Tuesday's City Council work session. The detailed framework is designed to seamlessly integrate MedStar employees into the Fort Worth Fire Department (FWFD), offering them a stable civil service structure with competitive pay and clear advancement pathways.
This shift significantly changes how Fort Worth responds to its citizens’ medical emergencies. The blueprint of the MOU, which will be attached to the existing Fire Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA), was commended by both the City and the Local 440 Firefighters Association.
The implications of this new arrangement extend beyond mere administrative updates. The goal is to foster a welcoming environment for incoming EMS personnel, ensuring that MedStar workers joining the city's fire department ranks will not need to reapply or take a civil service entrance exam. Furthermore, the MOU aligns with market and civil service step pay structures, setting a new precedent for EMS employment.
The City Council is slated to vote on the EMS MOU at the January 28 meeting. In the interim, preparations for this significant shift are in full swing. The City will be busy sending offer letters and coordinating with HR to confirm the terms are in place for the affected employees at the start of the July 6 pay period, ensuring a smooth transition into the new system, which commences officially on July 1.
