Residents of the Franklin Park Neighborhood can look forward to brighter nights and improved safety as a new street lighting system is poised to go up. The Public Works' Highway and Bridge Maintenance Division, in collaboration with Florida Power and Light (FPL), will embark on the task to replace outdated street lights, according to an announcement released by the Broward County Government. Funded through the transportation surtax, the initiative intends to ensure roads and sidewalks are adequately illuminated for the community's benefit.
Marking progress, the initial phase, made complete back in November 2024, dealt with sidewalk enhancements, the introduction of ADA-compliant pedestrian curb ramps, and swale improvements. Come Wednesday, February 5, locals can expect to slowly begin to see the new system come to life, with the project's completion eyed for July 2025, weather and other potential delay-makers notwithstanding. The county also plans to remove the existing wooden light posts scattered throughout the area.
New concrete light poles with LED luminaires will be installed along the county's right-of-way, meeting all Florida Department of Transportation and County lighting standards. During construction, motorists should expect detours, guided by a traffic officer, to minimize disruption, especially during off-peak hours. Pedestrians will be redirected to the opposite sidewalks to safely avoid construction zones.
The project was brought to the Franklin Park Homeowners Association's attention and the board members, ensuring that those most affected had a voice in the conversation. As for those seeking more details or wishing to express concerns, they can directly reach out to Project Manager Giovanny Bello Herrera, P.E. at 954-299-5016 or send an email to [email protected], as per the county's official statement.
