At the behest of the Fulton County Sheriff's Office, an officer-involved shooting in Atlanta is now under investigation by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI). The incident, which occurred on Monday, resulted in the death of an armed robbery suspect and injury to a law enforcement officer.
The confrontation began after a Fulton County Sheriff's deputy, responding to a robbery at a Krispy Kreme Doughnuts, was informed by an employee that the suspect was still nearby. The deputy encountered the individual behind an Easy Rental on the 600 block of Lee Street. It was at this location that the suspect allegedly opened fire on both the deputy and the witness, prompting the officer to take cover and return shots. According to a news release from the GBI, during the escalation, another grim discovery was made: two employees at the Easy Rental had also been shot by the suspect in an attempted robbery.
Both the deputy and the suspect were transported to a hospital following the exchange. The suspect was pronounced dead upon arrival. The officer, wounded in his hand, received treatment for the non-fatal injury. The GBI's independent investigation aims to bring clarity to the events leading up to the shooting, after which, the findings will be turned over to the Fulton County District Attorney's Office for a comprehensive review.
All parties involved are cooperating with the GBI's investigation, and the identity of the suspect has yet to be released pending notification of next of kin. Representatives from the Fulton County Sheriff’s Office have not yet provided further details on the condition of the deputy, who incurred the hand injury, or updates about the state of the two Easy Rental employees who were caught in the violent fray. The GBI is expected to continue to gather evidence and conduct interviews as part of its ongoing investigation into the officer-involved shooting incident.
