A Gilroy man has been apprehended following an intensive investigation into a series of commercial burglaries in the area. According to the Gilroy Police Department's social media post, Alexis Mata, 29, is suspected to have been involved in nearly twenty burglaries since November 2022.
Mata's alleged crime spree included the thefts of cash registers and other valuable items, which involved the breaking of windows to gain entry. The costs of the stolen goods and the damages inflicted upon the businesses reportedly run into thousands of dollars. Reports further connect Mata to several incidents on Christmas Eve, where six commercial establishments, including a restaurant and a vehicle, were burglarized. Gilroy detectives put in place a warrant to swiftly apprehend Mata at the end of January.
Mata was detected, detained, and arrested on Wednesday without complications in a coordinated effort between patrol officers and Gilroy detectives. He faces charges of felony burglary and vandalism and is currently being held without bail at the Santa Clara County Jail, as noted in the official police communication.
