A Greenwood resident sprang into action to save two neighbors and their dog from frigid waters after they fell through the ice of a local pond. The incident unfolded yesterday evening, when emergency services were summoned to a retention pond on Winterwood Drive in the Summerfield Village housing subdivision, following reports of a person through the ice, as WRTV reported.

According to the Greenwood Fire Department, the ordeal began when a 50-year-old woman, whom authorities have not named, attempted to rescue her dog from the icy pond. Her adult daughter also became submerged after trying to aid in the rescue effort. A neighbor, whose identity remains undisclosed, provided a timely response by throwing a rope to the struggling pair. The two women were reportedly 30 to 40 feet from the shore at one point in the harrowing ordeal, FOX59 cited.

Greenwood Police Department officers and the neighbor who threw the rope aided the women out of the water before paramedics took them to a local hospital in stable condition. The dog involved in the incident was unharmed, as the firefighters conducted a perimeter search post-rescue to ensure no additional victims were in danger, WISH-TV reported. Both women would have spent an estimated 5 to 10 minutes in the icy waters, with temperatures hovering around 25 degrees at the time of the rescue.

The Greenwood Fire Department has since urged the public to refrain from approaching icy surfaces during cold weather.
